PRO PLAN SCIENCE
Canine DNA
The Purina Canine Reference Family DNA Distribution Centre was established in January 1999 and supports research and genome map development.
Purina’s interest in genetics derives from a recognition that the nutritional needs of a dog or cat depend, in part, on their genetic background. Better understanding of these needs at the molecular level is expected to aid Purina in developing diets that will help individual animals achieve their full genetic potential.
Since its inception, the Centre has worked with top researchers in the field of canine genome mapping, providing DNA samples and project assistance. A critical effort for the Centre is contributing to the development of the genome map by maintaining DNA from selected dog families and distributing it to scientists around the world.
Distribution of the DNA is directed by an oversight committee comprised of experts who review research proposals for scientific merit and potential for advancing the field. The Centre currently stores DNA from 16 canine reference families. Many of the contributions were received from an existing collection at Cornell University.
